Safeguarding and Revitalizing Croatian Film Music
From Research to Concert Stage
As the only scholar in Croatia who specializes in film music, Irena Paulus participates in various projects of cultural importance. Her expertise is invaluable in the realization of film music concerts, especially those dedicated to Croatian film music, a field on which she has so far published two extensive books, thereby establishing a continuous line of research into Croatian film music.
For this reason, she is often a member of the organizational and authorial teams of film music concerts, assisting in shaping the programme and in managing copyright issues. Prior to that, she conducts research to locate or uncover sheet music materials which, in many cases, are lost, inaccessible, or kept in private collections.

Reimagining Croatian Film Music
In collaboration with the International Sound & Film Music Festival 2025, Irena Paulus served as the programme author and advisor for the ISFMF’s project entitled Musical Dialogues – Reimagining Croatian Film Music
For the purposes of the project, Croatian film music, music for television series, and video game music by prominent composers—Alfi Kabiljo, Arsen Dedić, Miljenko Prohaska, Damjan Mravunac, Dalibor Grubačević, and Ozren K. Glaser—were newly arranged. The arrangers were selected through an international open call, with the aim of arranging works by Croatian composers for string quartet, adapting applied music for the concert stage, and formally, thematically, and harmonically shaping a renewed version of these works.
Croatian compositions were arranged by Felix Spiller, Reiko Nomura, Isak Lundberg, Philip Domenico Calisto, Shir-Ran Yinon, and Fabijan Košćak. The result was a beautiful concert, held in October 2025 in the Croatian town of Samobor. which was later repeated at the Music Tribune in Osijek.

Song of Adriatic
Invited by the organizer and initiator of the project The Year of Ivo Tijardović and Jakov Gotovac, director Željko Rogošić, Irena Paulus served as an expert advisor and a key figure in locating the sheet music for the planned concert of film music by the Croatian composer Ivo Tijardović. Composer Ivo Tijardović (1895–1976) is best known in Croatia as an author of operettas and operas, but he was also active in writing popular songs, film music, librettos, and in designing costumes and stage sets.
Tijardović was also the first Croatian film music composer who, even before the Second World War, collaborated with the Berlin companies Ufa and Tobis and in 1937 composed music for the German films The Coral Princess (Korallenprinzessin) and Song of the Adriatic (Lied der Adria). At the film music concert held in his hometown of Split on July 16, 2025, to mark the 130th anniversary of his birth, music from these two films was performed alongside music from the films Sinji galeb, Mali čovjek, Ciguli Miguli, Mali Ivica, and Revija na dvorištu.
The performance featured the HRT Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Berislav Skenderović, with film scholar Danijel Rafaelić as commentator; Rafaelić had previously discovered the films The Coral Princess and Song of the Adriatic in the Berlin State Archives.

Croatian Film Music
Croatian Film Music was a major research project of Croatian National Radiotelevision (HRT) aimed at reconstructing and revitalizing Croatian film music. Its finale—a concert by the HRT Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Aleksandar Marković—took place on 22 December 2021 as a television recording in Studio Anton Marti at Croatian National RadioTelevision’s building in Zagreb.
The project was initiated and conceptually developed by Ivana Kocelj, Head of the HRT Music Department, film expert Dean Šoša, and musicologist and film scholar Irena Paulus, who launched and realized a project that, in addition to Croatian film music, also focused on music created for television series, animated films, and video games.
The concert programme followed the history of Croatian feature film, from the first Croatian sound feature-length film Lisinski, through classic films such as Koncert, Breza, Samo ljudi, and Glembajevi…, to more recent, musically notable films such as Neka ostane među nama. The programme also included music from the television series Gruntovčani, as well as from the only Croatian film to win an Academy Award, the animated film Surogat, and from the animated series Professor Balthazar and the video game Serious Sam.
Music by the following composers was performed: Arsen Dedić, Alfi Kabiljo, Bruno Bjelinski, Igor Kuljerić, Boris Papandopulo, Silvije Bombardelli, Anđelko Kobučar, Bojan Adamič, Tomica Simović, Živan Cvitković, Damjan Mravunac, and Alan Bjelinski. Some of their scores were arranged and/or reconstructed for this occasion by composers Daniel Legin, Matko Brekalo, and Frano Đurović.

Expanding Musical Horizons Across Media and Generations
Musical Research & Cultural Outreach
Irena Paulus’s interests are numerous and diverse. She participates in conferences and symposia, panel discussions, and special ceremonial events; gives lectures, conducts workshops, and masterclasses on a variety of topics, often promoting valuable yet overlooked musicians and musical genres such as the Zagreb chanson, Croatian musicals, Croatian jazz, music in silent film and others.
In addition to film music and other forms of applied music, which are at the centre of her writing and scholarly research, Paulus also strives to promote culture and the arts in all their forms by participating in various projects as an organizer and a music educator. She directs her activities primarily toward young people, but also toward people of all ages for whom music, culture, and the arts are not a central interest, with the aim of fostering the development of new audiences across all forms of artistic and cultural expression.
